What personal data we collect, why we use it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and your rights over it.

Who we are

53 Degrees App LTD, trading as 53° ("we", "us") runs the app at 53degrees.app. This policy covers the personal data we use for our own purposes, for which we're the controller under UK data protection law.

It doesn't cover the personal data your organisation puts into the app, such as your contacts. Your organisation decides how that's used, and we handle it on its instructions. The data protection page explains how. If your details are held in a 53° customer's organisation, ask that organisation about them first.

What we collect

What you give us

  • Your account. Your name, email address, password (stored only as a hash), profile picture, time zone and preferences, plus any authenticator app or passkey you add.
  • Your organisation. Its name, branding and settings, who its members are and their roles.
  • Billing. A billing contact, billing address and tax ID. Stripe collects your card, and we never see or store the full number.
  • Messages to us. Support requests, feedback and the reason you give if you cancel.

What we collect as you use the app

  • Sessions. The IP address and browser of each device you sign in on, so you can see and revoke them.
  • Faults. Error reports and server logs.
  • Where your visit began. The site you came from, any campaign tags in the link, and the first page you opened. We keep this for the browser session and save it with your account if you sign up.
  • Analytics. Until you accept analytics cookies, we only count visits anonymously and store nothing on your device. If you accept, we record the pages you open and what you click, tied to your account, and we can replay your session. Replays never show what you type. The cookie policy has the detail.
  • Email. Whether an email we sent was delivered, opened or clicked.

What we get from others

  • If you sign in with Google or LinkedIn, they give us your name, email address and profile picture.
  • If someone invites you to their organisation, they give us your email address.
  • If you connect a Google integration, we receive the data it covers. See Google account data, below.

If you're sent a proposal

A 53° customer can send you a proposal to read and sign. That customer decides how your details are used and is the one to ask about them. On their behalf we hold your name and email address, record when you open the email and the proposal, and, if you sign, keep your signature, the time, and your IP address and browser as evidence.

Google account data

Connecting Google Calendar, Drive or Contacts is optional, and each connection asks only for the access it needs.

  • Calendar. We read the calendars you choose to show on your Planner. If you turn on task sync, we create a "53 Degrees" calendar in your account and keep your planned tasks in it.
  • Drive. We can only reach files you pick. We store a link to each one, never a copy.
  • Contacts. We add the 53° contacts you choose to your Google Contacts and keep them up to date.

Our use of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. We use Google data only to provide the features above. We don't use it for advertising, we don't sell it, and we don't use it to train AI models. Our staff don't read it unless you ask us to, we need to for security, or the law requires it.

You can disconnect an integration at any time under Integrations in your account settings, or from your Google account.

Who we share it with

  • Our providers. The companies that host the app, take payments, send email and so on. They act on our instructions. The full list is on the data protection page.
  • Your organisation. Other members see your name, profile picture and what you do in the organisation.
  • Advisers. Our accountants, lawyers and insurers, where they need it.
  • Authorities. Courts, regulators or the police, when the law requires it.
  • A buyer. If we sell or merge the business, your data may pass to the new owner, who must keep to this policy.

Sending data abroad

Some of our providers store data outside the UK, mostly in the United States and the European Union. When personal data leaves the UK we make sure it stays protected, by relying on a UK adequacy decision (which covers the EU, and US companies certified under the UK-US data bridge) or by using the International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum to the EU's standard contractual clauses. Ask us if you'd like to know which applies to a provider.

How long we keep it

  • Your account, until you delete it. Deleting it removes your account, preferences and profile picture straight away.
  • An organisation's content, until its owner deletes it or deletes the organisation. An organisation that goes a year without a plan is deleted, after we email the owner and wait 14 days.
  • Activity history, for 90, 180 or 365 days depending on the plan.
  • Invoices and payment records, for six years after the end of the financial year they belong to, as tax law requires.
  • Everything else, only for as long as we need it for the reason we collected it.

Copies in our providers' backups are overwritten on their normal cycle.

Keeping it safe

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Every password sign-in needs a second step, private files are served through links that expire, and what our own staff can see is limited by role and logged. The data protection page lists our security measures. No system is perfectly secure, so if a breach puts you at risk we'll tell you and the Information Commissioner's Office as the law requires.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:

  • give you a copy of your personal data
  • correct anything that's wrong or incomplete
  • delete your data
  • stop or limit how we use it
  • move it to you or another provider in a usable format

You can also object to anything we do on the basis of our legitimate interests, and withdraw consent to analytics at any time on the cookie policy.

To use any of these rights, email support@53degrees.app. It's free, and we'll reply within one month. You can do much of this yourself in the app: edit your profile, revoke sessions and delete your account from your account settings.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, tell us first so we can put it right. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.

Children

53° is for people running a business. It isn't meant for anyone under 18, and we don't knowingly collect children's data.

Changes to this policy

We'll update this policy when what we do with personal data changes. The date at the top shows when it last changed, and we'll email you about anything significant.
